According to sources, an American woman was killed and four other passengers injured when a massive wave hit the cruise ship Viking Polaris (IMO: 9863209 | MMSI: 259144000) as it sailed toward the port of Ushuaia in Argentine Patagonia on an Antarctic cruise.

“It is with great sadness that we confirm a guest passed away following the incident,” Viking said. “We have notified the guest’s family and shared our deepest sympathies.”

Viking called it a “rogue wave incident” and said the four other passengers’ injuries were non-life threatening.

The ship is anchored near Ushuaia, where a federal court has opened a case to determine what happened. The Viking Polaris, a ship with luxury facilities built in 2022, has a capacity of 378 passengers and 256 crew.
