Two Hospitalized, Multiple Passengers Sick on BC Ferries Vessel

A medical emergency aboard a BC Ferries vessel (Spirit of Vancouver Island) resulted in multiple passengers falling ill, causing delays in scheduled sailings between Victoria and Vancouver on Saturday afternoon.

BC Ferries issued a notice alerting passengers that its 5 p.m. sailing from Swartz Bay to Tsawwassen was delayed by 67 minutes due to the incident. ASubsequentdepartures, including the 7 p.m. sailing from Tsawwassen and the 9 p.m. sailing from Swartz Bay, also faced delays.

According to a BC Ferries spokesperson, six passengers became ill in a stairwell aboard the vessel and required medical attention. Two individuals were transported to the hospital, while the remaining passengers received care.

Authorities, including paramedics and the RCMP, responded to the situation, but the cause of the sudden illness has not been disclosed 

In its advisory, BC Ferries reminded travelers with reservations to adhere to their designated check-in window as stated in their booking confirmation. This measure ensures that reserved vehicles are staged ahead of standby passengers and those booked on later sailings.

BC Emergency Health Services has been contacted for further details regarding the incident. BC Ferries is expected to provide further information to passengers and the public as updates become available.
