This November, Royal Caribbean, a global cruise holding company incorporated in Liberia and based in Miami, Florida, will open and inaugurate its new $125 million ultra-modern cruise terminal in the port of Galveston, Texas, UA, that is designed to be the world's first LEED-certified "zero energy facility."

The cruise line said that the new Galveston terminal will be the first to generate 100 percent of its required energy through on-site solar panels. According to reports, the 161,334 square foot state-of-the-art terminal expands Royal Caribbean's presence at the port, increasing the cruise line's capacity to accommodate up to 630,000 guests per year, and allows for the berthing of some of the world's largest cruise ships.

Jason Liberty, President and CEO of Royal Caribbean, commented: "We are focused on innovating in all aspects of our business, especially in our work to advance sustainability in the communities we visit. We deeply value both the oceans we sail and the communities we visit and operate, and the modern design and development features at our terminal in Galveston will work to serve both."

In 2019, The Port of Galveston entered into a long-term public-private partnership with Royal Caribbean in which the cruise line would build the terminal and then lease it from the port for 20 years, with four 10-year options. It was initially scheduled to open in 2021, but the pandemic has delayed many cruise-related projects.

The new terminal will rely on 30,000 square feet of solar photovoltaic panels, allowing for self-sufficient energy use. Also, Carbon emissions are being offset through the purchase of carbon credits. And it is also on track to become the first in Texas to achieve LEED Gold certification, which is expected to be awarded within the first two quarters of next year. The Galveston terminal marks the cruise line's fourth LEED-certified facility and its first Gold certification.
