Our featured AIS feeder for this month on ShipXplorer.com goes to Alexandros (SV3IRT), based in Argos, Greece.

We got to sit down with him and ask him a series of questions regarding what it is like to be a feeder, as well as tips and tricks for anyone who wishes to provide data to us.

Without further ado, let's get into it...

1 - What's your name, and how long have you been feeding for ShipXplorer?
Greetings, my name is Alexandros Karantzoulis. I have a considerable amount of experience in AIS and ADS-B data feeding, which I have acquired through my extensive involvement in related research during my doctoral studies. Additionally, I am an Amateur Radio (ham radio) operator (Callsign SV3IRT). Recently, I discovered ShipXplorer through FR24.

2 - How high is your antenna mounted & where have you mounted it?
As illustrated in the photographs, I have positioned my antenna on the rooftop of my building, at an elevation of 55 meters, affording a clear view of Nafplio Port and the Argolic Gulf. My station exhibits an average reception range of 40 nautical miles, with a maximum reception range of 80 nautical miles.
Equipment Description: R400, CX4-3 antenna, and 15m cable with Rasp Pi 4 and AIS Dispatcher.

3 - Do you have any advice for other feeders regarding setup or mounting?
I would like to offer the following suggestions for optimal performance:
Firstly, it is recommended to maintain a clear line of sight and utilize small cables during setup and mounting. Secondly, ensure that there is good insulation at the antenna connectors to minimize signal loss. Additionally, it is crucial to protect the equipment from high temperatures, as it can cause damage or affect the overall performance. Finally, to maximize the utility of the station, it should be kept operational 24/7.

Recently, I discovered ShipXplorer through FR24, where I have been feeding data for 3 years (03-Feb-2020).

5 - What is the good thing about having a ShipXplorer station?
I believe that the spirit of social contribution, as a ham radio operator, provides me with a sense of fulfillment to offer a small but meaningful contribution to society. Moreover, in the world of shipping, where Greek shipping ranks among the top globally, it feels like a duty to assist our people in the unknown sea.
